Director of Tax

SUMMARY

Manage everything Tax for a family office with a portfolio of operating businesses in the US Virgin Islands. Proactively provide sophisticated tax planning advice, prepare tax returns and identify the right structures and entities for various assets.

This is an individual contributor, generalist position with plenty of autonomy and direct interaction with the main principal. The ideal candidate must be willing to work in a dynamic, largely remote, family-business environment with reporting requirements for all types of taxes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare income tax returns for operating businesses, individuals and trusts.
  • Perform sophisticated tax planning across our portfolio.
  • Serve as lead tax advisor on new transactions and investments, including entity structuring.
  • Manage compliance with US Virgin Islands Economic Development Commission benefits.
  • Coordinate tax audits.
  • Prepare income tax provisions for internal financial statements.
  • Interface with professional advisors.
  • Interface with finance colleagues on tax issues for payroll, fixed assets, A/R, A/P, inventory.
  • Advise HR on structuring legal entities for employees, optimizing pension / deferred compensation / 401K plans, establishment of PEOs, etc.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be based in or able to move to St. Thomas, St. Croix or St. John in the USVI.
  • BS degree in Accounting (MAcc preferred) with Big 4 public accounting experience.
  • At least 12 years experience in public/corporate tax roles or ability to express equivalent or related experience in lieu of.
  • Partnership, corporate and individual income tax compliance experience with hands on, working knowledge of tax prep software: (i.e., Drake, LaCerte, ProSystems, etc.).
  • Familiarity with tax research applications (e.g., BNA, CCH).
  • Experience writing memos, developing and managing reports and customary business correspondence.
  • Experience performing detailed analysis of financial models, investment documents and reports; ability to to analyze, interpret, and articulate the tax implications of various decisions.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Effective communication (oral and written) and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Capacity to work independently and as an effective and engaged team member.

The target salary range for this position is $150k-$160k with flexibility to work from home on occasion.
